Why Battery Storage

Why Install Battery Storage With Your Solar Panels?

A battery storage system stores excess solar energy generated during the day for use at night or during peak demand times. This helps you maximise the value of your solar panels — using more of your own renewable energy instead of exporting it to the grid for a small SEG payment.

Use More of Your Solar Energy

Without a battery, typical homes use 30–50% of generated solar electricity — the rest is exported to the grid for a small SEG payment. With a battery, self-consumption rises to 70–90%. You use your own free electricity instead of buying from the grid.

Lower Electricity Bills

Use stored solar energy during peak rate hours (typically 4–7pm when grid electricity costs most). Avoid expensive grid electricity at night. Typical additional saving: £200–£400/year on top of existing solar savings.

Backup Power (Hybrid Systems)

Some battery systems provide backup power during grid outages — keeping lights, fridge, internet, and phone chargers running. Essential for homes with vulnerable residents, home offices, or EV chargers that need continuity.

Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

Using stored solar energy reduces reliance on grid electricity, which may come from fossil fuel sources. Maximise your renewable energy usage and reduce your household's net carbon output throughout the day and night.

How It Works

How Does Battery Storage Work With Solar Panels?

Solar panels generate DC electricity from sunlight, which an inverter converts to AC for your home. Any surplus not used immediately charges your battery. When solar stops generating — evenings, nights, or overcast days — the battery discharges to power your home automatically.

Day — Sunshine
Solar Generates, Battery Charges
  • Solar panels generate electricity
  • Home uses what it needs immediately
  • Excess electricity charges the battery
  • Once battery is full, surplus exports to grid (SEG)
Evening — Sunset
Battery Discharges for Your Home
  • Solar generation stops at sunset
  • Battery automatically discharges
  • Powers your home using stored solar
  • No grid electricity needed yet
Night
Grid Tops Up Seamlessly
  • Battery continues until empty
  • Typically 2–5 hours depending on size
  • Grid takes over automatically
  • Switchover is seamless — no interruption
Early Morning
Smart Off-Peak Recharge
  • On time-of-use tariffs, battery can recharge overnight at cheap rate
  • Ready before solar generation starts
  • Maximises cost savings year-round
  • Managed automatically by the system

System Sizing

What Battery Size Does Your Home Need?

Battery size depends on your household energy usage, solar panel output, and daily consumption patterns. A proper assessment ensures the battery is correctly sized to maximise self-consumption and reduce reliance on the grid.

Small
5–7 kWh
1–2 people, low energy use, 3–4 kWp solar
Solar panel size 3–4 kWp
Backup duration 2–3 hrs (essential loads)
Best for Flats & small terraces
Typical cost £3,000–£5,000
Large
13–20 kWh
4+ people, high usage or EV charging, 6–10 kWp solar
Solar panel size 6–10 kWp
Backup duration 6–10 hrs
Best for Large homes & EV users
Typical cost £8,000–£15,000
Sizing rule of thumb: Battery size should match your evening and night usage — typically 5–10 kWh for most UK homes. Larger batteries provide longer backup but may not fully recharge from solar alone in winter. We calculate the right size based on your actual usage data during the free consultation.

How We Work

How Is Battery Storage Installed?

Each installation is designed around your existing solar system (or new installation), energy usage patterns, and storage goals — from first consultation through to commissioning and app setup.

1
Free Consultation
We assess your existing solar system (or design a new system), review energy usage patterns, and establish your storage goals — backup, bill reduction, or both.
2
System Design
We specify battery size, coupling type (AC or DC), and installation location — garage, utility room, or outside wall. For DC-coupled systems, we include hybrid inverter selection.
3
Installation
AC-coupled (retrofit):
  • Install battery unit near existing inverter
  • Install control/energy management unit
  • Connect to consumer unit
DC-coupled (new solar):
  • Install hybrid inverter
  • Install battery unit
  • Connect solar panels, battery & grid
AC-coupled: 1 day  |  DC-coupled: 2 days
4
Commissioning
We commission the system, configure charge/discharge settings for your tariff (time-of-use, backup reserve), set up the monitoring app, and walk you through how to get the most from your system.

Costs

How Much Does Battery Storage Cost?

Battery storage costs depend on system size, brand, storage capacity, and whether the system is integrated with solar PV. Larger systems provide greater energy independence and better long-term savings. All prices shown include 0% VAT when installed alongside solar panels.

System Size Example Systems Typical Cost Suitable Home Size Best Use Case
Small (5 kWh) GivEnergy 5.2 kWh, SolarEdge 5 kWh
Entry-level — solid daily storage
£3,000–£5,000 2–3 bed homes Basic solar storage for daily use
Medium (10 kWh) Popular GivEnergy 9.5 kWh, Tesla Powerwall 13.5 kWh
Best balance of cost and capacity
£5,000–£8,000 3–4 bed homes Balanced energy storage & night usage
Large (15 kWh+) GivEnergy 13.5 kWh + expansion, Tesla Powerwall 2
Maximum independence & EV capability
£8,000–£15,000 4+ bed homes / EV users Maximum solar independence & EV charging
VAT: Battery storage installed alongside solar panels attracts 0% VAT. Standalone battery storage (no solar) is charged at 5% VAT. VAT rates verified July 2026 — confirm current rates before publishing.
Indicative figures only. All costs shown are planning estimates, not fixed quotations. Actual costs depend on property type, installation complexity, chosen system, and whether solar panels are being installed at the same time. A professional assessment is required before final costs can be confirmed.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About Battery Storage

1
Can I add a battery to my existing solar panels?
Yes. AC-coupled batteries work with any existing solar system, regardless of inverter type or brand. They are the most common retrofit solution and can be installed without making any changes to your existing solar setup. We'll advise on the best battery for your current system during the free survey.
2
How long does a battery storage system last?
10–15 years, depending on usage patterns and battery chemistry (lithium iron phosphate — LFP — tends to have greater longevity than NMC). Typical manufacturer warranty is 10 years or 6,000–10,000 cycles. Most batteries retain 70–80% of original capacity at end of warranty.
3
Is battery storage worth it without solar panels?
Batteries are most cost-effective when paired with solar panels. Without solar, charging from the grid (even at off-peak rates) typically results in a longer payback period of 8–12 years. However, if you have a time-of-use tariff with a significant peak-to-off-peak price difference, a standalone battery can still provide meaningful savings. We'll calculate your specific payback during the free consultation.
4
Can a battery power my home during a power cut?
Only with additional equipment. Standard battery systems shut down automatically during grid outages for electrical safety reasons. Backup capability requires either an EPS (Emergency Power Supply) module or a hybrid system with islanding capability. We advise on backup options during the consultation if this is a requirement.
5
Is there a grant for battery storage?
Battery storage is not currently covered by ECO4 or the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS). However, 0% VAT applies when battery storage is installed alongside solar panels (5% for standalone). This provides a meaningful saving compared to the standard 20% rate. Contact us for the latest funding information at the time of your consultation.
